BALLARAT HIGH
While on placement at Ballarat High I took part in the year 9 arch program. This is where year nine students are separated in classes that have the same two teachers teaching their core subjects (one teacher teaching them maths and science and the other teacher teaching them English and History) and then several times a week two classes with the two teachers join together and become one big class. The arrangement of the year nine program is similar to that of the classes at a primary school in regards to the fact that they are not having to change teachers all of the time in the way that they generally are at secondary school. This arrangement was particularly successful with year nine students as year nine can often be a troubled year. By having two core teachers it means that the teachers and students can get to know each other on a more personal level.

While on placement I was able to develop my teaching skills by:
*Working with four other PSTs to plan and teach a unit on teen issues *Taking part in the practice of team teaching *Being presented with the opportunity to learn from a teacher majoring in my subject areas *Having the opportunity to teach my subject areas of history and English *Going on a number of excursions ie to Fernwood for a girls group excursion and the war memorial of Ballarat *Using a number of assessment strategies *Observing elective classes including drama, music, cooking and woodwork *Gathering a range of introductory activities to use at the beginning of lessons *Attending staff meetings, planning sessions and Professional Development sessions |
