SUSTAINABILITY
While on placement at Yuille Park I had the opportunity to experience first hand how schools use the 'Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden' program. I believe that this program is a great program to be running at a school as it teaches students about healthy eating and cooking while also giving them the responsibility to grow and produce their own fresh fruit and vegetables. From this experience I feel that I would be able to incorporate a similar sort of approach in my own classroom/school.

At Yaapeet I assisted students in constructing their own vegetable garden. Together we prepared an area of dirt, created rows and planted and watered the seeds. Yaapeet Primary school also had a worm farm in which they could use for compost and food scraps. Similar to Yaapeet Primary St John's also had a compost system in which students would take turns at implementing. By having a compost at school it encourages students to take on sustainable practices in their own lives.

To the left I have included an attachment to a unit that I created on the topic of sustainability. The aim of this unit is to increase student’s awareness of the importance of being sustainable in order to preserve and look after our environment. It aims to introduce students to different ways in which they as individuals can be sustainable and have an impact on their world. The unit will cover topics such as the importance of being sustainable, recycling, limiting power usage and substituting alternatives for more sustainable ways of doing things. By the end of this unit students should be able to walk away recognising the importance of sustainability and should have a collection of ideas of different ways that they can use which will work towards preserving our environment. Creating this unit assisted my understanding of sustainability and how I would go about teaching it.
